In 1994 the then director of the school joined a Swiss federal study trip to China and established formal and informal friendships with several universities and associations there. This lead initially to the establishment of short-term training programmes for Chinese executives, particularly from the less-developed province of Gansu. Meanwhile the FHNW has become the leading house in educational China projects: executive training programmes now operate with several partners (Executive Certificate in Business & Public Management, Executive Training for Shanghai Executives and more, a dual degree programme with Qingdao Technological University). 

The Asian Connection also lead to several highly successful off-shore post-graduate programmes in Vietnam especially with the Banking University of Ho Chi Minh.
