Universities of Applied Sciences

There are eight universities of applied sciences* (UAS) in Switzerland and nine academic universities. As Switzerland complies with the European Bologna Agreement, all universities offer 3-year Bachelor and 2-year Master programs. Doctoral programs are taken predominantly at the academic research universities and some UASs.

UASs, by Swiss law, must be active in four sectors: deliver tertiary education, provide further and professional education and development, conduct applied research and development and provide consulting services. This matrix ensures continual transfer between theory and practice, between academic thought and industrial reality.

Entry criteria to all Swiss state universities is a baccalaureate.  Entry into UASs is on the basis of either

  • Professional Baccalaureate in the field of designated study (vocational training/apprenticeship and formal education of four years post secondary schooling)
  • Academic Baccalaureate plus one year of practical experience in the field of designated study

The Conference of Universities of Applied Sciences (KFH) is an association of all the UASs.

* The term "applied sciences" is not limited to only "sciences" but was a term coined in the late 1960's in Germany to denote tertiary education, which is applied and targeted to the practising professions, in the realm of technology, business, natural sciences, law, education, social work and design.  In other parts of the world, these type of universities are similar to polytechnics or professional universities.
