Cost of Living
The Swiss frank is the national currency. Many shops and restaurants accept Euro. Electronic payment is usual at most shops, supermarkets, petrol stations etc. Most of the standard credit and debit cards are accepted. There are ATM´s throughout the country: there are also plenty of banks which are open during the week, generally between 9 am and 5 pm.
Due to the high standard of living, prices are comparatively high. Students should budget between Sfr. 1000 - 1500 per month depending on factors as accommodation selected and how often you go out. Per semester this could add up to (in Swiss franks):
| Books, materials | 500-- | |
| Excursions etc | 1'000.-- | |
| Health and other insurance* | 600.-- | |
| Meals | 3´000.-- | |
| Accommodation | 2´500.-- |
These costs are of course flexible and may not all apply − e.g. EU citizens will generally be covered by their national health schemes* which enjoy reciprocity with Switzerland.
Students should also note that prices vary slightly depending on which campus they select. Prices in Basel for accommodation might be slightly higher than for Olten or Brugg.
