Insurance

Banks and insurance are as much a part of Switzerland as chocolate and pocket knives.  Urban legend claims the Swiss are the most insured population in the world.

Swiss law requires that everyone staying in Switzerland for three months or more has medical insurance.  There are bilateral agreements with European Union countries: students should ensure they have an E128 card before they leave home. The E111 card is no longer sufficient. Make sure you have a few copies of the card and upon arrival in Switzerland send this to the officials (KVG) who will forward an insurance card to you.  This covers you for illness and accident though you will have to pay a contribution towards any costs incurred for treatment.

Students from outside EU and EFTA countries, and who do not have proof of international medical coverage, will have to buy medical insurance in Switzerland.  This costs about SFr 120 per month.  There is one company specialising in affordable insurance for students.

You will have to provide the community office with a copy when you register upon arrival.  Ensure you keep a copy for yourself should you require medical treatment.

Students are also advised to ensure they are covered for Third Party Liability.
