City of Olten
Olten itself is a relatively small city on the major river Aare. Outside its medieval walls however, a modern city has grown which is especially popular as a major conference centre. This is due to Olten being the node of the Swiss railways: the cities of Zürich, Berne, Basel and Lucerne are all within half an hour's train journey and connections are frequent.
As it has such a large catchment area, a full infrastructure is available. There are numerous sport facilities (athletics stadium, ice-rink, large swimming pool, airfield etc) and even "exotic" sports are available (beach-volleyball, hang-gliding, baseball etc).
There are five cinema complexes within Olten and numerous bars, restaurants and night clubs. Access to the even larger number of events and facilities in the cities of Zürich, Berne, Basel or Lucerne are easily within reach by train and a network of night-buses between these centres ensures lectures can still be attended the next day.
