Switzerland
Alps, middle of Europe, neutrality, watches, chocolates, banks, cows, Red Cross, yodeling, the World Economic Forum, International Olympic Committee: Switzerland is all that and more!
There are high-tech precision industries and rustic farmers side by side. It is a landlocked country with high mountains which won twice the America’s Cup in high-sea sailing. It has 7 million inhabitants, 4 official languages, 26 cantonal governments and is usually top in international tables listing earning power, standard of living and competitiveness.
Switzerland is clean, peaceful and orderly with one of the best public transport systems. Switzerland is still relatively safe and therefore many of the leisure activities take place outdoors. Swiss are sometimes perceived as slightly reticent but always friendly. Life is not cheap here – but it is pretty good.
Climate
Switzerland enjoys a mostly moderate climate with four distinct seasons; in summer it can be relatively warm (25° – 30°) with rain showers.
Money
Switzerland has its own currency; the Swiss franc. In many places – in particular the more touristic places – you will be able to pay with Euros. However, we recommend to pay as much as possible in the local currency; to save money.
Language(s)
In the Basel area people speak (Swiss) German but most citizens do speak English as well.
