About us - University of Applied Sciences Northwestern Switzerland (FHNW)

Beginnings

The School of Engineering of the University of Applied Sciences Northwestern Switzerland (FHNW) comprises the technical departments of the previous engineering schools of the UAS Aargau and UAS Solothurn and sections of the industry department of the UAS Basel-Stadt/Basel-Landschaft.

Location

As of 2008, the entire School of Engineering will be housed on a new campus in Brugg-Windisch. The engineering departments of the former UAS Aargau and UAS Solothurn have already been located at the Brugg-Windisch site since the beginning of the autumn 2006 semester.

Mission

The success of our students and of our project partners is also our success. Our actions are guided by three main principles:

We aim to provide excellent training for our students and to give our partners the very best services. By orienting everything that we do towards top performance and results, we are able to achieve efficient training for our students and a high level of economic efficiency.

Based on scientific principles, our approach embraces innovation and experimentation; this leads to top positions in all our areas of competence.

We keep our eye on the big picture; this enables us to bring about the breakthrough of sustainable ideas and interdisciplinary solutions.

Values

Honesty, tolerance, openness, mutual respect and esteem are of vital importance to us in all our dealings with others. We realise our vision by constantly being prepared to learn and by actively helping to bring about change.

Cooperation

We actively seek and promote cooperation at all levels; inside and outside our School of Engineering, within the University of Applied Sciences Northwestern Switzerland, with other schools and universities in Switzerland and abroad, with national and international companies and with government and non-government organisations.

What we offer

Currently there are some 1300 students at the School of Engineering of the University of Applied Sciences Northwestern Switzerland studying in ten programmes for Bachelor’s degree and diploma qualifications, as well as various post-graduate and MAS courses.

Our flexible study concept gives students the opportunity to tailor their studies to suit their personal requirements with a choice of full-time or regular day-release degree programmes and individual part-time courses. As from 2008, we will be introducing a Master of Science in Engineering programmes in various fields of study.

Working in 13 institutes, some 340 members of staff - lecturers, assistants and scientific support personnel – provide research, development and consultancy services for industry and the public.
