The Institute of Energy in Building focuses its applied Research and Development (aR&D) on the field of sustainable technologies.
The Building group deals with research on sustainable building.
Special focus is set on:
- Retrofit and refurnishment
- Zero and Plus Energy Buildings
- Building envelope efficiency
- Embedded energy
- Sustainable urban development

- Use of ambient heat by heat pump systems
- Energy assessment of industry and commerce
- Control strategies for efficient heating and cooling
- Pre- and co-normative research as well as
- Project management in projects of the international energy agency (IEA)

The MINERGIE® Building Agency is associated with the Institute of Energy in Building.
The MINERGIE® Building Agency covers the research fields of building techniques, building technology, standards and quality assurance and in addition supports the certification authorities.
MINERGIE® is a quality label for new and retrofitted buildings. The brand is equally supported by the economy, the cantons and the federal government and is protected from misuse.
