Design Fiction
Designers imagine and build new realities by designing multiple artifacts.Thereby, it is recognized as a key characteristic that they see the world not simply as it is, but as it could be: they focus on the inherent uncertainty of the taken-for-granted, the destruction of the established, criticism of the self-evident, thinking in terms of what is possible. Design creates new realities and tests these against specific images and objects, products and interfaces, signs and spaces, collections and productions. The term design fiction allows us to simultaneously emphasize the real and the fictitious, the self-evident and the unexpected, the actual and the possible, the material and the imaginary aspects of design. In this way it opens up an interesting perspective for research in design: how does design reconcile this heterogeneity?
