Course Content & Career Opportunities

The central theme of Industrial Design is the design of industrially manufactured products through a focused, creative and interdisciplinary development process: the design process.

What is Industrial Design?

Industrial Design can be said to deal with solutions to problems that have taken on form and which significantly help to shape our lives and experiences in modern society. Over and above their pure form and function, products convey intentions and meanings, much more than this, they model work processes and strategies. This applies both to everyday articles such as household appliances or entertainment electronics (consumer products) as well as complex products such as transportation systems or production equipment (capital/investment goods). In addition, intangible products like services/services and interaction processes are designed. The concept of the conventional product has been extended and diversified.  This results in a tension which is the force behind industrial design today.

Studies

The study of Industrial Design – as part of product and industrial design – provides the students with conceptual, methodological and craft skills for the design process and enables them to design independently. The core competences in industrial design are in the creative, problem-oriented design process, which includes communicative and representational  abilities in the form of drawing, model and virtual simulation. To keep up with the rapid changes experienced in the design profession and to play an active role, students learn to develop a confident approach to their own discipline as well as multidisciplinary and social competence.

Career Prospects

Graduates of Industrial Design can look forward to being members of a versatile profession, in some cases with high specialization. You will be qualified to work in design departments of companies, in independent design offices or to open your own design studio.
In the context of information- and communication-technologies, new jobs for industrial designers are being created.
