After two semesters of introduction to fundamentals, students choose between Interaction, Image and Typography as areas of concentration for their major studies. The four semesters of major studies convey additional focus on the themes of Imagination, Identity, Information and Intervention as core areas of Visual Communication.

Interaction
The area of concentration Interaction concerns itself with contemporary digital media, ranging from digital video to interactive computer monitor or screen interfaces to interactive installations in space. Although this field of activity contains a high degree of technical and media knowledge, the confrontation with messages through images is also in focus here. Students learn to include the dimension of time and interactivity alongside the more traditional design components.

Image
The design and analysis of messages through images (iconic messages) stand at the center of the area of concentration Image. The generation of images through the graphical process of lending form, the creation of images via apparatus, as well as the analytical handling of existing images have received new and pressing attention in the digital image deluge. The analytical and strategic capability of dealing with iconic messages is thereby growing in importance in an environment characterized by competition for attention.

Typography
Typography is engaged with the giving of form (script design) and the organization (typographical composition and layout) of alphabetic and ideographic systems of signs. Alphabetic sign systems establish foremost the sound sequence of spoken language, but they also contain a visual dimension which is conveyed through the formulation of letters. A typographic composition structures and also interprets texts.
