Perspective through Master of Arts in Visual Communication
The Bachelor’s degree program pursues competency in design as an overarching educational objective. The Master of Arts in Visual Communication and Iconic Research strives to deepen this competency and complement it with an academically anchored competence in iconic analysis. The Institute thus carries on the influential tradition of the Basel School of Design, modernizing it from a standpoint of present-day scholarship. Since September 2007 the Visual Communication Institute has conducted a Master of Fine Arts program of studies in collaboration with the University of Illinois at Chicago. This offering is internationally oriented and lends perspective to students at the BA level.
Further education, Master of Advanced Study and summer courses
The Visual Communication Institute offers the MAS Graphic Design I and MAS Graphic Design II in Basel. In focus is practice-oriented Visual Communication and its relation to image theory and iconic research (MAS Graphic Design I) and respectively to media theory and media studies (MAS Graphic Design II). The study program offering is designed as a two-semester, full-time program per MAS. Annually in June the Visual Communication Institute also offers one-week summer workshops in the areas of placard design, typography, information design, film animation, interaction design and design research.
