Competition of ideas: Vision for the Upper Rhine Region
Development of an icon of identity and vision for the region.
The Master of Fine Arts Program of the Visual Communication Institute of the Academy of Art and Design FHNW took part in a competition of ideas for an icon for the Upper Rhine Region. The foundation initiative of the “Fondation Entente franco-allemende” established this competition in collaboration with the “German-French Institute of Ludwigsburg (dfi).” The competition should make an important contribution to the political project of a tri-national European metropolitan region along the Upper Rhine.
On Wednesday, 14 November 2007, an internationally assembled artistic jury proposed two projects from a total of 13 for a final elimination round, and another for third place. Students from the Academy of Art and Design FHNW in Basel, Karlsruhe and Mulhouse participated in this competition.
The official awards ceremony took place on 17 January 2008 in the European Parliament in Strasbourg. The project by Jinsu Ahn of the Visual Communication Institute of the Academy of Art and Design FHNW was awarded second prize. The proposed font has since then been employed by a range of political organizations along the Upper Rhine. The first-place signet, a rhinoceros, was proposed by the Academy of Design Karlsruhe.
