The investigations are part of a larger research project entitled iconic alphabet. We didn’t choose the expression "iconic alphabet" without a certain touch of irony. Although the dream of an iconic based communication traces back to the ancient world and to mediaeval times, guided by the interest of philosophers and scholars to teach, to learn and to communicate beyond written of spoken words, any right to absoluteness in this field must be called naïve. However, the two words of the expression compress the common and unavoidable contradiction in saying that we read images and see letters. Iconic alphabet in that respect can be understood as a useful expression to keep a balance between cognitive and intuitive or readable and visible facets of communication. Hence the question arises whether graphic or iconic elements can be developed and organized in a more comprehensive manner to replace circuitous descriptions in certain areas such as pharmaceutics or public transport.
