IMA Facilities

The institute for Medical and Analytical Technologies (IMA) offers the following facilities:

Implants Design

  • (Individual) Implant designs are developed based on medical imaging data (CT, MR) and using biomechanical models. The software employed consists of proprietary developed and commercially available components and include DICOM-handling, image processing (e.g. segmentation, registration, vectorisation), intervention planning and surgical navigation as well as traditional CAD and FEM.

Rapid Prototyping Technology

  • Diverse technologies: MCP Realizer (SLM), Z-Printer, OBJET EDEN
  • Production of objects from diverse materials (Ti, Ti6Al4V, Ti6Al4V ELI, CoCr 316L, plastics, plaster-like materials).

3D data acquisition

3D Scanner GOM, μCT Skyscan, Handyscan 3D (mobile hand scanner), 3D ultrasound Siemens Acuson Antares with research interface, NDI Optotrak Certus

Quantitative Metallography

  • Cutting, sanding, polishing and electrolytic polishing devices
  • Technical camera equipment for the exposure of cuts and digital picture analysis
  • Roughness analyses
  • Analysis of cuts to determine texture, particle size, linear dimensions, stability properties, hardness structure, heat treatment, layer thickness, soldered and welded connection, surface hardening, corrosion, damage analysis, evaluation of thermo-mechanical process history and degradation, defects.

Mechanical analyses

  • Static and dynamic strength test, endurance strength test
  • Tensile and pressure test for  hydropulsor ranges from 0 – 5 kN
  • Equipment is controlled via measuring station and measurement data analysis is performed per software.

Damage analysis

  • Scanning electron microscopy and light optical microscopic analysis methods of fracture mechanics, origination and evaluation of occurring fracture types, morphology of corrosion and fracture structures, composition, mechanical properties.
  • Measuring microscopy with digital picture processing
  • Surface roughness analysis

Corrosion analyses

  • Electrochemical corrosion analysis
  • Static immersion testing, combined with mechanical alternating load

Dressing of titanium surfaces

  • Elektropolishing, Anodic oxidation, Phosphate convertion coating, Passivation, Hydrophilisation, Plasma treatment, Sterilisation, Ultrasonic cleaning, Sandblasting.
