CARMA – Carbon dioxide management in power generation: key technologies, scenario analysis and public acceptance for carbon capture and storage (CCS)

Large and medium scale electricity generation with a low CO2 footprint produced by a combination of highly energy efficient combined cycle gas turbines with additional carbon capture steps will play an important role in the future. One of the most attractive technological options renders the use of fossil fuels almost CO2 neutral, namely, by the use of hydrogen-rich fuel gases produced by gasification of fossil or biogenic fuels in a combined cycle power plant coupled with CO2 capture and sequestration (CCS). This “pre-combustion carbon capture” essentially removes carbon from the fossil fuel (e.g. natural gas or coal) to produce mainly hydrogen. The development of reliable, low emissions combustion technology is the main technical challenge in the application of hydrogen-based fuels to gas turbines. The current project addresses the basic fundamental combustion characteristics of these relevant fuel mixtures.
