Institute for Social Work and Health

Health has always been a core element of social work theory and practice. Social work lays bare the psychosocial dimensions of health, impairment and illness. It develops approaches to action based firmly on resource-oriented strategies. Insights into the significance of social phenomena for a state-of-the-art understanding of health inevitably raise ethical considerations. At the same time, scrutiny also falls on the methods and political action adopted, since social work is meant to influence human behaviour and living conditions. Our Institute is dedicated to the following areas of specialisation:

  • Resources Management, Health Promotion, Prevention
  • Psychosocial Counselling and Clinical Social Work
  • Addiction, Mental Health, Ethical Decision-Making
  • Health-related Aspects of Social Work
  • Work and Health, Health and Social Policy Frameworks

Our Institute undertakes applied research and renders commissioned services to third parties. We are well-networked and boast a wide range of domestic and international partners. Our staff brings its expertise to the BA / MA Social Work modules and offers a range of continuing educationopportunities, including state-certified professional development programmes in Health Promotion and Prevention, Gerontological Care, Ethical Decision-Making in Organisations and Society, Psychosocial Counselling, a specialisation in addiction issues and a range of specialist seminars.

Our core research area is the promotion of psychosocial health, especially the development of promotion measures and their monitoring and evaluation. Research themes include health competence, healthy bodyweight, life skills promotion, and promoting non-smoking.

In close cooperation with the Institute of Research and Development of the FHNW Teacher Training College, we run the across-University competence centre RessourcenPlus R+. R+ is part of the network <bildung und gesundheit Schweiz> operated by the Federal Office of Public Health (BAG).
