A soft silane layer protects enzymes

Enzymes are biocatalysts which reduce the energy needed for chemical reactions. They have very specific functions but are not very stable.

HLS researchers have solved this problem by binding enzymes to silica nanoparticles which cover them with organosilanes - silicon oxide with functional organic groups. This silane layer is arranged perfectly around the enzyme to protect the biocatalyst from high temperatures and aggressive chemicals without stopping catalysis.
