PFAS Pollution and Removal: Breaking the Forever Cycle - Johanna Freilinger, Uni Innsbruck

PFAS are a group of man-made chemicals and are used in products such as waterproof jackets, non-stick pans, and fast-food packaging. The problem is that they persist indefinitely in the environment and can be harmful to both human health and nature. Despite increased attention, the analytical quantification of PFAS remains a major challenge. Reliable detection is complicated due to their occurrence at trace concentrations, their tendency to adsorb onto container surfaces, and the fact that even though PFAS are one substance class, they comprise an exceptionally diverse array of structural motifs, a characteristic not seen with most other problematic substances. In addition, effective remediation is crucial, and current research is increasingly focusing on improving treatment strategies, as commonly applied methods such as granular activated carbon (GAC) and anion exchange (AEX) often show limited efficiency, particularly for short-chain PFAS.
