Since 2014, AVA Biochem has been producing high purity 5-HMF for research and specialty chemical markets, as well as technical grade 5-HMF for bulk chemical applications, opening the door to bio-based furan chemistry on an industrial scale.[2] The specific challenges faced by the company at different stages of its development will be highlighted, as well as the opportunities and potential contribution of established industry, the public and policy makers in successfully implementing innovative ideas to achieve a sustainable economy.
