Design Center Basel

Design mirrors cultural, political, technological, economic as well as social trends and developments. It gives change processes a shape and contributes to the development of economically successful artefacts and items. At the same time, design makes a contribution to culture; this needs to be supported by developing and sustaining a vibrant space of discourse. The Design Center Basel is an international endeavour that pools and develops knowledge spaces, initiatives and current discourses on design under constantly changing circumstances by facilitating and organizing lecture series, exhibitions and publications. The platform is aware of Switzerland’s rich design tradition and places this in context with current international trends and tendencies. Through the use of archives and design collections the platform is able to blend historical knowledge with present-day issues and topics in connection with the multiple layers of meaning designed objects and environments usually have. In terms of research, special attention is given to interdisciplinary models focussing on design, technology, science, business and art.

Embedded in this active cultural cluster, the Design Center Basel’s aim is to develop new methodologies and innovative research and exhibition projects that reflect and do justice to the complexities of modern environments. Based on the knowledge spaces, the strategic research fields the various design institutes at the FHNW AAD are engaged in, the traditions of the old Basel School of Design and its embedment in the Campus of the Arts, the Design Center Basel focuses on the following topics: the transformation of present lifeworlds and environments, contemporary culture and the artefacts and forms it engenders.
