The continuing education course "Product Design for the Circular Economy" is aimed at practising designers, engineers and product managers who want to engage with physical products and follow the principles of the circular economy. The course is offered as part of the university initiative "Circular Design Processes and Practices".
The workshop takes place over three consecutive weekends (Fridays/Saturdays) and begins with an excursion to a company that has already gained sufficient experience in the context of circular design. This practice-orientated introduction is followed by an introduction to the topic of circular economy.
The second block offers in-depth insights into the practice of the circular economy with short input presentations from external practitioners. The product system will then be carefully exam-ined with material flow and stakeholder analyses in order to identify possible starting points for improvements.
The last two days are dedicated to working on innovative solutions for the participants' own questions, closely accompanied by input and coaching.

Samuel Perret, Head of Innovation and Strategy for Sustainability at milani design & consulting. Samuel Perret studied industrial design in Zurich and worked for milani d&c in the early 2000s as a designer, mainly in medical device design. In parallel, he completed a postgraduate degree in business administration. His personal interests led him into the field of sustainability. He worked for several years as a sustainability consultant, assisting companies with creating their strategy and reporting, working as a project manager in the field of energy and resource efficiency, and managing a specialist unit for SME environmental consulting at the City of Zurich. He rejoined milani d&c in mid-2020 to head the sustainability department, where he brings his knowledge to bear on innovation and design projects.
Nando Schmidlin, Sustainable Design Strategist at milani design & consulting. Nando studied industrial design in Zurich and always wanted to become a famous furniture designer. In 2011, the Zurich Design Museum purchased a piece of furniture he had designed - something he is still proud of today. But what would Papanek say about it? That question led him to Helsinki, where he completed the MA International Design Business Management / Creative Sustainability in 2018. Design for Transitions, or how innovation teams align with societal issues, has guided his practice ever since. Back in Switzerland, he worked in a small Circular Economy consulting firm and joined milani in 2020.
