The educational program of HEK (House of Electronic Arts) takes place at the intersection of the fields of art, media culture, and technology. In this course, we provide an overview of the current field of media art and offer practical insights into tools, tricks, and know-how for creative approaches to digital technologies in educational settings, following the motto "low floor, high ceiling." The course is aimed for teachers and educators.
HEK presents contemporary art that utilizes electronic and digital media as tools and reflects on their use and societal impact. In our mediation, we address the themes of the artistic projects at HEK, operating at the intersection of art, media culture, and technology.
In this course, we provide an overview of the current field of media art and offer practical insights into tools, tricks, and know-how for a creative approach to use digital technologies in educational settings. Drawing from HEK's years of experience in education and creative handling of digital media, we take a tour of the exhibition, provide background information on HEK and its collection of net-based art, and delve into the tools and ideas from the repertoire of BitFabrik, the programming club of HEK. Additionally, we explore "Makey Makey" and "Scratch," where programming and tangible design seamlessly come together. Furthermore, we delve into live coding, involving programming with text and creating electronic rhythms and sounds. Of course, do-it-yourself technologies and soldering a small trash dance bot are not to be missed.
Throughout the workshop days, we strive to work with freely accessible programs as much as possible. The course is aimed for teachers and educators.
The education program at HEK is developed by Patricia Huijnen and Isabella Maund. Patricia Huijnen is a trained art educator and artist with international experience in museum education. She is the co-founder of the software and cultural company freisicht and heads the BitFabrik at HEK. David Bregenzer is an arts and design educator and artist who leads workshops at HEK, including the Live Coding Workshop.
The continuing education programme of the Institute Arts and Design Education aims to broaden participants’ perspective of their own artistic work and shared creative endeavours with others. Participants will be introduced to creative educational strategies, and acquire the ability to make creative debates effective for social processes. Both the weeklong continuing education courses and the optional one-on-one coaching sessions integrate methods from the fields of education, the fine arts, arts education, performance and other participatory practices. The improvement of artistic, creative and communication skills can help pave the way for more equal opportunities. Social inclusion, as one of the main conditions of equal opportunities, requires good communication and cultural competences – and it is these competences that artistic and creative educational strategies can do an excellent job at cultivating. By strengthening artistic and creative competences, we not only increase the realms of possibility for design, but also for communication, social interactions, the strengthening of social structures, personal expression and the experience of self-efficacy.
No prior artistic or technical experience is required. University degree or equivalent work experience is required.
