Lecturer
Barbara Thönssen is a professor at the Institute for Information Systems at the University of Applied Sciences and Arts Northwestern Switzerland (FHNW). She graduated from the University of Camerino at the Dipartimento di Matematica e Informatica on the topic of the „automatic, format-independent creation of metadata for documents based on semantically enriched contextual information”. In the mid-1980s, she graduated in Information Science from the University of the Saarland and then worked at Softex AG in Saarbrücken (Germany). She was responsible for the development of electronic dictionaries for spell checking and automatic indexing. After that, she taught Information Management and Information Retrieval at the Magisterium for Documentation in Frankfurt a.M. (Germany). In the 1990s, she worked as a project manager for major Swiss banks, and carried out projects in the fields of electronic archiving, document management and workflow management. In 2000, she became department head for E-Government and Electronic Archiving Solutions at Stadt Zürich, Organisation und Informatik (OIZ), in Zurich (Switzerland). Since 2004, she has been working at the FHNW in Olten (Switzerland). She manages several further education courses such as the CAS Digital Data Management and the CAS Geschäftsprozessmanagment; the CAS Digital Transformation is in preparation. Barbara Thönssen has been instrumental in several national and international research projects. Her current research focuses on implementing semantic technologies in practice.
