MAKE/SENSE PhD programme

MAKE/SENSE PhD programme of the FHNW Academy of Art and Design promotes practice-based research in art and design. The programme operates within three future-facing areas of concern: Planetarity, Materiality and Response-ability, and focuses on the relevance and potentials of practice-based research in art and design for sociocultural, political, and ecological transformations.

We encourage interdisciplinary practice and foster regular exchange among a dynamic group of PhD candidates. Our structured 3-year curriculum elaborates research methods, contemporary theory, and humanities perspectives to augment practice-based research. The study programme supports the research of PhD candidates, involves selected guest lecturers and discussants, and aims at developing a growing vocabulary of practice-based research. The public-facing programme of workshops and lectures is a great way to get in touch and learn about our current interests.

The programme integrates the expertise of faculty from the FHNW Academy of Art and Design Institutes, including Experimental Design and Media Cultures (IXDM), the Institute Contemporary Design Practices (ICDP), the Institute Digital Communication Environments (IDCE), Institute Arts and Design Education (IADE), and the Institute Art Gender Nature (IAGN). Our PhD supervisors have practical and theoretical backgrounds and are well positioned to support the PhD candidates in their research. The PhD degree is offered in partnership with Kunstuniversität Linz and supported by swissuniversities. The programme activities draw on an outstanding network of international partners, including: the Internationales Forschungszentrum Kulturwissenschaften (IFK), Cluster of Excellence Matters of Activity at Humboldt-University of Berlin, SciencesPo Media Lab Paris and metaLAB (at) Harvard.
