Thomas Villiger joined the University of Applied Sciences Northwestern Switzerland (FHNW) in 2019, where he leads the bioprocess technology laboratory. His main research focus is on the development and optimization of biopharmaceutical processes (oligonucleotides, proteins and viral vectors) as well as their implementation in production processes, where experimental as well as mathematical models in combination with modern analytical methods are applied to maximize not only the yield but also the desired product quality.
He worked in the biopharmaceutical industry for more than a decade, including in cell culture development at Merck-Serono and Novartis, as well as in various positions at commercial manufacturing sites at Novartis and Biogen.
Thomas Villiger holds a master’s degree in Chemical and Bioengineering from ETH Zurich. He carried out his PhD in the group of Prof. Massimo Morbidelli at the Institute of Chemical and Bioengineering at ETH Zurich.
