IT Meets OT: Key Insights from the OT Security Summit

How can we better protect critical infrastructure in an increasingly connected world? This question was at the heart of the discussions at the OT Security Summit, where experts from industry and cybersecurity shared practical insights into the challenges of securing Operational Technology (OT) environments.

Several recurring themes emerged across the panels, highlighting that effective OT security is not just about technology, but also about people, governance, and organisational readiness.

  • People as the First Line of Defense
    • Speakers emphasized the need for gamification, practical awareness training, and a positive error culture. Employees who report mistakes quickly should not be criticized, they should be seen as an essential part of organisational resilience.
  • Availability Comes First in OT
    • Rather than relying solely on patch management, organisations need complementary security strategies such as network segmentation, secure gateways, and architectures aligned with standards such as IEC 62443.
  • Adding to the Complexity: Supply Chain Risk
    • Supply chain security and third-party transparency is a critical part of cyber resilience. Organisations must understand not only their own systems, but also the risks introduced by partners, vendors, and service providers.
  • Regulation as a Driver for Security Investment
    • Regulatory pressure can be a powerful enabler of cybersecurity maturity. Frameworks such as the Cyber Resilience Act (CRA), can act as catalysts for innovation and long-overdue security improvements.
  • Emergency Exercises Reveal Leadership Gaps
    • While Business Continuity Management (BCM) was repeatedly described as the backbone of organisational resilience, discussions around crisis simulations showed that even well-prepared technical teams are not enough if leadership structures are not equally ready.
  • The Greatest Risk: Indifference
    • Cybersecurity may not always be visible as a productivity driver, but it is increasingly a precondition for operational continuity, resilience, and trust.
