Visual Communication Institute
The Visual Communication Institute / The Basel School of Design is today a Department of the University of Applied Sciences Northwestern Switzerland (FHNW), Academy of Art and Design (HGK). We offer curricula at the Bachelor and Master level in the field of Visual Communication with international accreditation (BA, MA, MFA). The faculty members are active participants in the design community and are involved in applied research projects. The central focus of all activities is the creation of images for communication. The Visual Communication Institute developed out of the influential tradition of the Basel School of Design beginning in the 1960s. We have expanded this background to address the challenges of the 21st Century. We are part of an international network of Art and Design Schools that provides many opportunities for students and faculty.

|Nomination "Out-of-the-Box Award 2013"|
Manuel Trautmann was among the nominees for the "Out-of-the-Box Award 2013" for his paper, "Speechless." The paper deals with languages threatened by extinction, and focuses on individual words having a culture-specific meaning that can only be described in entire sentences. Manuel Trautmann wrote the paper within the scope of his Bachelor's thesis 2013. We congratulate him heartily.
