Opening the HPC Lab: A New Space for AI, Systems, and Applied Research

31. März 2026

A new hub where high-performance computing, AI, and hands-on innovation come together.

On May 28, 2026, the School of Computer Science at FHNW will open the doors to its new High Performance Computing Lab—a space shaped by a simple observation: computing has become foundational to nearly every domain, and nowhere is this more evident than at the intersection of HPC and AI. As models grow larger and applications more ambitious, infrastructure alone is no longer enough. What is needed are environments where systems can be explored, tested, and understood in practice—where research, education, and industry meet on equal footing.

The HPC Lab was created with this ambition in mind. Alongside its CALCULON cluster and specialized systems, it provides a setting where new ideas can be developed before they reach production environments, where students learn on real hardware, and where partners from industry can engage without barriers. It is as much about capability as it is about access: enabling experimentation with modern architectures, supporting teaching through hands-on platforms such as GPU-backed Jupyter environments, and fostering a community that spans disciplines and sectors.

The opening event will reflect this spirit. It will feature a series of short talks on key topics in High Performance Computing and AI, offering insights into current developments and future directions. Participants will also have the opportunity to visit the HPC Lab space, experience the infrastructure firsthand, and engage with the people behind it. The evening will conclude with an apéritif and informal exchange.

We see this opening not as a conclusion, but as a beginning: the starting point of a growing community around high-performance computing, applied AI, and collaborative innovation. We warmly invite partners, colleagues, and anyone interested to join us for this moment and to help shape what comes next.
