02/2026: A Research Visit to the Musikverein Archive in Vienna

Agnese Pavanello recently visited the Archive and Library of the Gesellschaft der Musikfreunde in Vienna, where the only known copy of Giuseppe Tartini’s manuscript Regola per bene accordare il violino is preserved.
During the visit, she was able to examine the manuscript directly, take detailed measurements, and verify the watermark – an essential step for codicological and source-critical assessment. In addition to the Regola, several other Tartini sources preserved in the collection were examined firsthand, also in order to assess and compare the hands of the copyists.
At the archive, Agnese also met her colleague Andrea Zedler, a member of the Augsburg research group, who is currently studying Viennese sources related to Tartini’s pupils. The meeting provided a welcome and pleasant opportunity for scholarly exchange.
The staff of the archive were exceptionally kind and supportive, facilitating careful examination of the materials. Conducting research in such a historically rich institution- deeply embedded in Vienna’s musical heritage – was both professionally rewarding and personally inspiring.
