Collaborative Innovation in Material Science and Drug Development – Functionalized Tough Adhesive Hydrogels for Local Drug Delivery to Tendon Tissue, Eckhard Weber, PhD, Novartis Institute for Biomedical Research/Musculoskeletal Disease Area Basel

In a collaboration with the Wyss Institute for Biologically Inspired Engineering at Harvard University, we invented and characterized a polarized tough adhesive hydrogel with a dissipative tough matrix on one side to support tendon gliding and a chitosan adhesive surface on the other side for strong adhesion to tendon tissue. The functionalized tough adhesive hydrogel served as a high-capacity drug depot for sustained drug release. In the seminar biomaterial properties and biomedical functionalities of the tough adhesive hydrogel will be discussed. Moreover, the experience of a multidiscipline interorganizational innovation concept will be shared.
