Overview

  • Using an anthology of early science fiction as a basis, the class will read and discuss a selection of stories in addition to time spent on vocabulary activation
  • Early science fiction deals with the effects of technological change on individuals and society and students will learn how such changes investigate what it means to be human and man’s place in the universe.

Learning objectives Upon successful completion of the module, participants can:

  • comprehend complex texts and locate significant details and nuances
  • understand and interpret abstract, complex, colloquial literary writing forms
  • appreciate style distinctions, implicit and explicit meanings in a text
  • orally express ideas and the finer points of meaning in a text with clarity and precision
