Overview This module aims to develop awareness of the background and basic con-cepts in the financial world and improve students’ business English communication proficiency by looking at historical events like the Stock Market crashes to current events such as high-frequency trading. Emphasis is placed on shared interaction with the material being presented through reading short texts, watching video clips/film extracts and listening to short descriptions.

    Areas covered could include:
  • deregulation of the financial industry
  • retail & investment banking
  • financial statements
  • central banks, financial regulation and supervision
  • foreign exchange
  • the stock market and derivatives
  • mergers

  • Each student will be required to present a current finance-related topic for discussion.

Learning objectives
    Upon successful completion of the module, participants can/will have:
  • explain the basic concepts of a variety of financial areas
  • built up their vocabulary range through reading, listening and discussion
  • developed their reading and listening comprehension of texts and videos on financial topics
  • improved their speaking skills through class discussions, presentations and follow-up discussions

Previous knowledge Entry based on placement test or successful completion of e4/ten2. Language level C1 or above
