Zielsetzung / Purpose
Intercultural Communication - To introduce the key issues and discussion in intercultural communication studies - To raise awareness of a student's own culture(s) - To raise sensitivity to intercultural communication issues - To give students practice in analysing situations in intercultural communication - To offer students a range of models, tools and techniques for use in intercultural communication and in analysing such situations - To prepare for the semester abroad. Presentation Participants are able to develop an effective strategy for a specific presentation

Intercultural Communication - The Nature of Culture - The Swiss-German culture as a point of reference - Contexts of intercultural communication, e.g. language and culture, verbal and non-verbal communication, perception. - Models of intercultural communication: Kluckhohn, Hall, Hofstede, Trompenaars and their successors Presentation Developing and Organizing the Presentation Verbal and Visual Support in Presentations Delivering the Presentation Q & A

Intercultural Communication - Attendance of 'Presentations' course - 'Interpersonal Communication' or equivalent communication studies - fluent English (C1, spoken) Presentation A level of English at CEF B2 is required and level C1 recom-mended

Leistungsbewertung/Testanforderung(en) / Assessment
Intercultural Communication - Attendance of group coaching session (presentation proposal discussion with lecturer) is mandatory, general course attendance is recommended. - Group Presentation Exam (mid-June /beginning of official exam weeks) - Length: 20 min + discussion - Grading: graded (individual grades, especially for Presentation skills part) - one integrated module examination, together with the course 'Presentation' Presentation Graded group presentation based on topics given in the Inter-cultural Communication module For assessment details, see Intercultural Communication description.
Bemerkungen
Intercultural Communication This course can only be taken in connection with the course 'Presentations' as they are examined together on the same occasion. Exchange students with fluent English skills are very welcome (unfortunately only few places available!) Presentation Parallel course This course is to be taken together with the Introduction to Intercultural Communication course for a total of 3 credit points. Participants will be expected to take an active role in design-ing and delivering group presentations based upon topics defined by the lecturer of Intercultural Communication module as well as providing constructive feedback to other course participants. Participants are expected to give constructive feedback on their peers' presentations and thus an attendance requirement of 4 (of 5) contact meetings will be in force. Any student attending less than 4 meetings without acceptable reason will not be admitted to the module exam.
