Nummer50602S1Zielsetzung / PurposeAfter four semesters of study the project work is a work with a written final documentation in which the specialist business knowledge acquired by the student is covered in detail and put into practice on a real-life issue. In addition to the knowledge acquired during lectures and private study, students must also acquire additional knowledge in order to process the practical subject. It is up to the students themselves to acquire that knowledge. (expertise)
The project work is processed based on known scientific findings. The project is carried out using project management methodology. The project work involves solving complex tasks. This requires of the students a systematic approach, analytical skills, and a degree of mathematical and statistical knowledge. Students must also be capable of evaluating and applying tools and aids relevant to solving the problem. (methodological competence)
By working with the client, students learn to adopt the correct behaviour in a business environment. As part of the project team they learn to find the appropriate roles, to contribute personally and in terms of content, and to deal competently with areas of conflict. As contractors they are called upon to justify their ideas and solutions to the clients who have commissioned their work. The project work also provides the students with scope for creative work and for coming up with creative solutions. They are required to act in ways appropriate to the situation and those they are addressing, and to show maturity, assurance and decisiveness. (social skills)
During the project work students must not only deal with their own expectations, but also know how to deal with the expectations of others. Beforehand the students must observe standards and values, be able to differentiate between them, and attribute them correctly. Students are made to face the limits of their performance and, based on the project management, are required to set priorities and assume responsibility. They learn to cope with situations of stress. (personal skills)

The contact units for the project management course do not take place on a weekly cycle; rather, they are designed to usefully complement the project work module. Lectures are held as half-days or full days. Besides conveying the subject matter they are also designed to provide additional impulse for the project work and allow a critical reflection on the project work's current situation.
The use of a web-based project management tool may also be considered.
