Summer Studies 2018

Two universities of teacher education, situated in the south of Germany, University of Education Freiburg and in the northwest of Switzerland, School of Education FHNW, offer together an inspiring opportunity to study top current issues of teacher training with an international faculty.

Our Offer at a glance

The International Summer Studies Programme in Freiburg (Germany) and Basel (Switzerland) is a four-week programme open to German, Swiss and international students of teacher training (Bachelor and Master). During four exciting and challenging weeks participants attend courses, discover local culture and establish networks with people from around the world.

  • Date: 4 June 2018 to 29 June 2018 (course duration: 4 weeks)
  • (Side programme is starting on 1 June 2018 in Berlin GER)
  • Places: Freiburg Germany (4 – 16 June) and Basel Switzerland (16 – 29 June)
  • Total ECTS credit-points: 12 (6 US credits)

Academic Programme

Our Summer Studies Programme offers a varied and intensive programme of specialised studies in Inclusion as a highly topical subject of educational science. The Summer Studies are a four-week seminar, taught in English by internationally experienced lecturers. The courses build on at least two years of educational studies; they are academically challenging with a strong focus on teaching. Interaction between students and lecturers is highly encouraged. Lecturers are experts in their fields and experienced practitioners.

Our programme offers four different modules each lasting one week:

  • Inclusion, power relations, inequalities and justice
  • Inclusive education – regional, national and international perspectives on inclusive school development
  • Public History: Monuments as sites of social debate on inclusion and exclusion
  • Life skills education, human rights education and inclusion

The academic content has around 120 contact hours: lectures, group work, and individual study of literature and preparation of short papers.

Cultural and social programme

Attractive cultural and social events will make the participants’ stay an unforgettable experience. The programme features a guided tour of Berlin from 2 to 4  June and a guided tour to the Swiss mountains (the program is arranged on a short term basis depending on the weather, no special mountain equipment required but a kind of athletic shoes.) These two offers cost additionally.

There will be many ways to get to know the two cities of Freiburg and Basel as well as the surroundings. The cities offer a tremendous amount of recreational, sporting and cultural activities.

About us

University of Education, Freiburg

The University of Education, Freiburg was founded in 1962 and gained university status in 1971. With approximately 4,800 students, it is the second largest of six Universities of Education in the federal state of Baden-Württemberg. Two thirds of the students studying at University of Education specialize in teacher training, either for primary or lower secondary schools. These study programs are leading to Bachelor and Master degrees, all in the field of Education. Qualified students may also continue their studies for doctoral and postdoctoral degrees.

School of Teacher Education, University of Applied Sciences and Arts Northwestern Switzerland FHNW

The FHNW is Switzerland’s second largest University of Applied Sciences and Arts. Its nine faculties, which all offer practice-oriented degree programmes at Bachelors and Masters level, continuing education, research and consulting. The FHNW is accredited by the Swiss Federal Government.

Our geographical location bordering on France and Germany promotes innovation, market orientation and inherent internationalisation.

The School of Teacher Education FHNW is an acknowledged pioneer and leader in professional innovation. Our programmes are accredited; our lecturers are highly qualified in their academic fields and their teaching methodology. They possess years of teaching experience in their academic fields and contribute current education expertise from their research activities.

Staying in Basel: Basel is one of the most successful economic regions of Switzerland and central Europe. Basel is very famous for its pharmaceutical research, art exhibitions, museums and cultural events. The historic city is more than 2000 years old and the quality of life ranks among the best in the world. Basel is a vibrant centre and hosts numerous international trade fairs, such as Baselworld and the world’s largest Art Fair ARTBasel. Modern architecture aficionados find buildings by Herzog & de Meuron, Mario Botta and many more.
