Industrial Design

The poetry of design – designers create products and objects in all their facets. Moreover, they define the meaning of things and their relationship with us humans.

A core theme of industrial design refers to the design of serially manufactured goods and objects. Basis for this is learning how to do it in a targeted, creative and interdisciplinary design process. Social, cultural and technological conditions tend to change at rapid speed, which means that the work of designers is subject to ongoing change and redefinition. Designers now are not only responsible for what products look like, they also shape the relationship between humans and objects and the meaning things convey in a specific context. Ethical issues, environmental questions and the problem of natural resources play into what design actually communicates and what values we associate with the process. Genuine added value, longevity and the mindful and intelligent use of materials are becoming ever more important.

In this context we need to redefine and expand the conventional concept of production – and thus the core object of industrial design. Today industrial designers are also involved in configuring immaterial products such as services and interactive processes. Hereby digital integration plays an especially important part.

In the context of a Bachelor of Arts FHNW in Product and Industrial Design at our Institute, students acquire the knowledge and skills required for independent and critical design work and a successful career in the rapidly changing world of industrial design.

Beyond that, our MA programme “Studio Industrial Design” in the Masterstudio Design gives students the opportunity to develop and sharpen their individual profile, lending them the tools to come out on top in the international design world.
