What do you Need to be Able to do as a Cyclist?, FHNW School of Architecture, Construction and Geomatics

School of Architecture, Construction and Geomatics

Parallel to the increasing number of cyclists, the number of accidents involving cyclists is also rising. With this project, we investigate whether and how accidents can be prevented by improving cycling skills.

Conclusion

Cycling is becoming increasingly popular. It has the potential to solve numerous issues such as traffic congestion or air pollution, brings health benefits, and is enjoyable. However, parallel to the increasing number of cyclists, the risk of accidents is also rising. Reasons for this include the growing complexity of road traffic, increased demands on cycling skills, as well as the increase in cyclists whose cycling experiences date back several years. Consequently, accidents could be prevented by improving cycling skills.

The interdisciplinary research team of FHNW APS, FHNW HABG, and Pro Velo Kanton Zurich collaborates with experts from practice and conducts a large-scale study with cyclists in Switzerland.

Project Aims

The aim of the project is to identify relevant cycling skills and situations with a high risk potential.

Implementation

To identify relevant cycling skills, workshops with experts active in the field of cycling safety and cycling training will be conducted. In parallel, cycling accidents will be analyzed to determine in which situations and along with infrastructure types cycling accidents occur. Following the workshops and accidents a survey is to be conducted in Switzerland, to determine which cycling skills are present among the general populations. Finally, existing cycling trainings will be analyzed and set against identified cycling skills from experts as well as the general population.
