The contemporary practice of magazine and book design defines the material medium as a narrative space that can convey a wide range of styles, intentions, and different reading experiences. This requires an intensive examination of the relationship between content and form. The workshop takes a close look at this relationship by emphasizing the holistic nature of editorial, conceptual, and design-craft practices.

The goal of this week-long workshop is to edit complex text and image content, develop a design concept, and produce a booklet in the university workshops. Through exploratory design, participants will investigate the variety and impact of different compositions of texts and images, firstly on an individual surface and later in the dramaturgy of successive pages. In the course of this process, they will be taught the basic design knowledge of font selection, typesetting, layout, typographic or image grids.

Subsequently, they will learn to apply the technical parameters of production such as prepress, paper materials, laser printing processes, and bookbinding techniques.

Visual communication is a tool of knowledge generation in its own right. Visualizations make things perceptible, imaginable and graspable.
