Study Fashion Design

In keeping with the leitmotif “Doing Fashion”, the BA programme Fashion Design is all about living the practice of design conjointly with an ongoing reflection on contemporary everyday culture.

“Doing Fashion” means becoming involved and assuming responsibility for the shaping of the present and the future. The aim of “Doing Fashion” is to throw open alternative spaces of fashion design and break away from conventional fashion concepts.

At the Institute of Fashion Design students are encouraged to understand fashion holistically, that is, with regard to fashion’s aesthetic, sensuous as well as social function. We regard fashion as a part of everyday culture with the capacity to critically reflect on social transformation and advancement.

The BA programme at the Institute of Fashion Design creates a lab situation in which the entire design process of a contemporary fashion practice is acted out. Students attain a comprehensive design practice and the competence to act assertively as well as critically, in addition to developing a specific design language of their own. They engage in current discourses, explore body work, and critically reflect on contemporary fashion trends. Following the “Look Therapy” approach, students learn to understand that individual performance is a complex interplay between seeing and being seen.
