Curriculum Vitae

Georges Starobinski is a musicologist and pianist. After taking his master degrees at the University of Geneva and at the Schools of Music of Geneva and Munich (piano with Harry Datyner, orchestra conducting with Arpad Gérecz and Hermann Michael), he worked as a coach and opera conductor at the Theater Basel (1987-90) and as an assistant at the University of Geneva (graduation in 1996 with Jean-Jacques Eigeldinger). He then became a full professor at the University of Lausanne, where he also taught musicology at the University of Music (HEMU) and the Swiss Federal Institute of Technology (EPFL/Collège des humanités). His research focuses on questions of music aesthetics and music theory in the 19th and early 20th centuries, with an emphasis on the lied repertoire, which he also cultivates as a pianist. In 2019, he received the "Fondation Pierre et Louisa Meylan" prize for all of his publications.

While studying orchestral conducting in Munich, he received decisive impulses from Brigitte Fassbaender and Helmut Deutsch, which led to his development as a Lied accompanist. He has performed with Brigitte Fournier, Irène Friedli, Stephan Genz, Philippe Huttenlocher, Christian Immler, Shigeo Ishino, Angela Kerrison, Urszula Kryger, Stephan MacLeod, Sophie Marilley, Kammersänger Thomas Moser, Marcus Niedermeyr, Rudolf Rosen, Carine Séchaye, Mona Somm, Bénédicte Tauran, Robin Tritschler, the Zürcher Vokalquartett and the Basler Madrigalisten, among others.

As a Lied accompanist, Georges Starobinski has taught several summer courses with vocal teacher Eva Krasznai Gombos, and is currently involved in the Specialised Master's degree in Lied Performance at the Hochschule für Musik Basel.
