Layer-by-Layer Technology to immobilize enzymes for the catalytic degradation of environmental pollutants and the detoxification of hydrogenperoxide

Layer-by-Layer (LbL) coatings can be used to immobilize enzymes on surfaces. Using this technique (A), the enzyme laccase was immobilized onto a reactor (B). The goal is the use of such reactors in a continuous process set-up (C) at different flow-rates (D) to effect oxidative degradation of pollutants in water. Future other applications of this technique may include the surface functionalization of medical implants to increase their lifetime. Graph (E) plots the activity of the LBL immobilized enzyme catalase for up to 3 weeks.
