Räumliches Hören und binaurale Audioaufnahmen
Da wir mit zwei Ohren hören («binaural»), sind wir in der Lage, eine Klangquelle räumlich zu verorten. Unterschiede in der Laufzeit, der Intensität und der Klangfarbe der akustischen Signale, die auf die beiden Ohren treffen, ermöglichen uns, ein Schallereignis auf ca. 1° in der Horizontalebene (links – rechts) und ca. 10° in der Medianebene (oben – unten) zu lokalisieren.
Mit einer räumlichen Audioaufnahme kann die räumliche Verortung von Klangereignissen simuliert werden, was ein intensives räumliches «Eintauchen» ermöglicht. Dazu muss die binaurale Aufnahmen mit Kopfhörern angehört werden.

Einfache binaurale Aufnahmen lassen sich mit zwei identischen Mikrofonen erstellen, die wie In-Ear Kopfhörer im Ohr getragen werden («Originalkopf-Mikrofonie», OKM). Bekannte OKM-Modelle:

Eine weitere Möglichkeit für professionelle räumliche Audioaufnahmen sind Mikrofone mit 4 oder 8 Einzelmikrofonen, deren Einzelsignale anschliessend zu einem binauralen Stereosignal verrechnet werden (360°-, VR-, Ambisonic-, Surround oder 3D-Mikrofonie). Beispiele:
