Symposium:Teaching Artistic Strategies

“Teaching Artistic Strategies” is a four-day symposium on research and pedagogy in the context of art and design institutions. It is aimed at junior researchers in practice-based research in art and design and art and design education, co-organized by the Institute of Arts and Design Education (IADE) and the Make/Sense PhD Program IXDM.

The symposium will offer an opportunity to junior scholars to consider their research in terms of teaching and reflect on their contribution to knowledge by transferring research topics and methods into innovative pedagogies. Selected participants will present teaching formats that come out of their research projects. The symposium will provide a supportive environment to present their research strategies and a network platform to engage with international peers.

The symposium will take place from Monday to Thursday, 23-26. May 2022. It will include three introductory workshops offered by the organizers, twelve teaching demonstrations by selected participants, complemented by three keynote lectures by invited guests who make important contributions to the fields of artistic research and teaching. We plan to publish the outputs of the symposium in a special issue of a journal on arts and design education and artistic research. The event addresses the challenge of transferring academic knowledge - produced in art education and practice-based research - to teaching programs, formats, and skills. We propose to focus on this challenge through experimental approaches characteristic of the research practices of the participants.

The symposium will take place during four consecutive days, with morning workshops, afternoon presentation sessions and evening lectures.

Workshops
Each day we start with a workshop by one of the organizers who will be giving examples of their work on transferring academic research activities into teaching for BA and MA degree levels.

Presentation sessions
Every day, we will host 4 presentations by selected junior researchers, who will present their current PhD or Postdoc research projects in the form of a class. We invite junior researchers to develop proposals for imaginary teaching scenarios, as introduction to the subject or to the methodology they use.

Lectures
Three invited established scholars in the fields of arts education and artistic research will provide us with diverse possibilities of communicating, engaging and transferring academic artistic research into various levels of teaching while also sharing their experience on the challenges in scientific communication.
