International Conference on Cooperative and Human Aspects of Software Engineering (CHASE 2021).

Titel: The Effects on Social Support and Work Engagement with Scrum Events

Abstract— One of the core values of the Agile Manifesto is “individuals and interactions over processes and tools.” Scrum implements interaction through five key events (Sprint, Sprint Planning, Daily Scrum, Sprint Review and Retrospective). There is limited work been done on how, these events influence perceived social support and work engagement. This paper examines perceived social support as a strengthening factor and the outcomes in an agile work environment. Drawing upon the job demand-resource model, the research question is how do Scrum events relate to social support and what effect do they have on work engagement? We conducted an online survey with 132 Scrum professionals and analysed the data using structural equation modelling. Results show that the Scrum event Retrospective strengthened social support. Moreover, social support is positively related to work engagement. No significant effects were found for the other Scrum events. The research contributes to the limited empirical understanding on perceived social support as well as work engagement in an agile work environment; it provides companies with an understanding of the importance of Retrospectives as a Scrum event

Über CHASE

CHASE is a high-quality venue for research related to the cooperative and human aspects of software engineering. Researchers and practitioners have long recognized the need to investigate the cooperative and human aspects. However, their articles have been scattered across many conferences and communities. The CHASE conference provides a unified forum for discussing high-quality research studies, models, methods, and tools for human and cooperative aspects of software engineering. We provide a meeting place for academic, industry, and practitioner communities interested in this area, and for those who are curious to see what it is all about.
