Abstract:

Initially dependant on American imports, European manufacturers soon began replicating Columbia and Edison's designs, while also incorporating unique nationalistic elements. The presentation highlights the innovations of European inventors and the challenges they faced, such as legal and patent issues. It also explores how public use of the phonograph shaped the industry's development, offering insights into the interaction between innovation, law, and cultural identity as it examines  the rise of the phonograph industry in Europe at the turn of the 20th century.
