Module description - Extended Reality

Number
exr
ECTS 3.0
Level advanced
Overview Extended Reality (XR) refers to the entire spectrum of immersive display technologies including augmented, mixed and virtual reality. XR requires advanced human-computer interaction (HCI) techniques that rely on spatial computing. This module covers the foundations of XR both in theory and in practice. You will learn fundamental XR concepts and implement your own prototypes using existing hardware.
Content

  • Fundamental concepts for designing XR applications
  • Fundamental technologies (SLAM, sensor technologies, sensor fusion, photogrammetry)
  • Overview of the XR device landscape and input devices
  • XR development tools (Game engines, 3D modeling tools, webXR)
  • Creating virtual replicas of physical objects (digital twins)
  • Multi-sensory XR design, spatial audio, haptics
  • Input modalities and HCI for XR (voice, eye tracking, hand tracking), spatial interaction patterns
  • Fundamentals of user comfort and embodiment (human factors, diversity, accessibility, health, security and privacy, ethics)
  • Conducting user experiments in and with XR

Learning objectives Students can

  • recognize and distinguish terms and application domains from XR (e.g. reality-virtuality continuum);
  • understand XR basics (e.g. SLAM, sensor technologies, sensor fusion, photogrammetry);
  • compare and classify input devices, human-computer interaction (HCI) paradigms, and hardware technologies, can discover content, configure and use them;
  • connect the theoretical knowledge on the meaning and impact of human factors in XR to its practice. Design personalized, complex XR solutions for the user (human centered design);
  • acquire sufficient competence to create, design, implement and modify XR prototypes for various XR types (virtual, augmented, mixed reality solutions);
  • evaluate an XR prototype (e.g. a digital twin) in a user study.

Previous knowledge
  • Computer-Grafik (comgr)
  • Einführung C# und das .NET-Framework (ecnf)
  • 3D User Interfaces and Experience Design (uied)

Exam Format Continuous assessment grade, weighting 100 %
Additional Information The course materials and lectures will be provided in English. You are allowed to submit your reports in German.
You will have opportunities to work with state-of-the art virtual / augmented / mixed reality headsets including Hololens 2, as well as some mobile-device based “at home” options will be made available.
Watch this ”10-min video” to get a sense of the exciting potential of XR technologies and the importance of the innovative HCI solutions.
