      Students work on a self-selected data science projects and thereby acquire practice-relevant competences, including the ability to formulate and carry through a data science problem. At the beginning of the semester, the students choose which competencies they would like to develop further during the semester and whether they work in teams or individually.


      Through the challenge, students come into contact with the technical issues of the challenge domain (application area), acquire the necessary basic knowledge of this domain and deepen this as much as necessary to be able to solve the task appropri-ately in an agile way of working. They document their progress and competence development in the course of the Challenge.


      The proof of competence consists of a submission, a presentation and a defense. The students are required to convince the experts that they have reached the de-sired level in the selected competencies.

      Learning outcomes

      Agile project management Students use agile project management to develop the challenge iteratively and incrementally. The entire project team is responsible for the success of Challenge X.


      Domains Understanding Students work their way into relevant topics and acquire domain knowledge that allows them to solve the data science problem appropriately.


      Modelling strategies and methods Students formulate a modelling strategy and break down the problem into data science tasks using methods and technical tools. The selected methods and technologies are appropriate and decisions are well-founded. The content-related and methodological project risks are known and controlled.


      Execution of a Data Science project Students work on problems according to industry-standard processes. They approach questions and tasks in a data-driven manner and implement (iterative) solutions. Working hypotheses are formulated and verified/falsified with data.


      Documentation and reproducibility Students create a complete and comprehensible documentation of the work, work processes and decisions. The results can be reproduced on the basis of the documentation.
