Community-based eye care: local and international interventions
The principles of public, community and global health make it possible to serve populations more equitably.
In this module, students will become familiar with the concept of the social determinants of health and with the global epidemiological situation of vis-ual impairment and blindness (prevalence, most frequent causes).

We will also look at various models of care to promote access to quality eye care for under-served populations, both locally (marginalised populations in high-income countries: homeless population, remote regions, indigenous populations, elderly people at home, migrants) and internationally (low- and middle-income countries: strengthening).
These good practices in community and global health will be supported by evidence.
- Define the social determinants of health
- Distinguish between the various levels of mapping of the social determinants of health (e.g. individual characteristics, living environments, systems, global context)
- List the most frequent causes of visual impairment and blindness in the world (high vs. low/intermediate income countries)
- Describe the elements and good practice of models of care that promote access to eye care for marginalised populations in high-income countries
- Describe the elements and good practice of models of care that promote access to eye care for marginalised populations in low- and middle-income countries.
