Hello World!
Prepare for your studies and learn how to write your first small programs in Java. To help you get started, we have put together a short program from an online course, along with additional materials by Barbara Scheuner, Head of the iCompetence degree program. You can work through the online course at your own pace and use our supplementary materials for a deeper understanding.
In addition, we invite you to a meet-up at FHNW once a month. There, we provide a short introduction to a programming topic and give you the opportunity to meet other students. We are also available on site to support you with any questions or issues related to the online course or the additional materials.
Do you already have some experience with Java? Or have you completed the course and would like to go further? Then come by and we will help you install an IDE and the Java SDK so you can gain even more hands-on experience.
Not sure what an IDE or an SDK is? No problem. At the beginning of each meet-up, we cover exactly these kinds of questions and introduce you step by step to the world of computer science.
The meet-ups take place on site at FHNW in Brugg or Basel and are led by FHNW lecturers.

Online course
To prepare for your studies, we recommend the course “Java Tutorial” by w3schools . This is a free online course that you can complete individually while also reading the supplementary materials by Barbara Scheuner.
We recommend completing the course over six weeks, covering the following topic blocks:
Week and Content | Additional materials on the topic |
Week 1: Introduction, Output
Week 2: Variables, Data Types, Strings
Week 3: Opearators & Math, Conditionals | Kapitel 1-3 https://doc.et.ethz.ch/latest/p_java2_TH.pdf |
Week 4: Loops, Arrays | Kapitel 4 https://doc.et.ethz.ch/latest/p_java2_TH.pdf |
Week 5: Methods, Classes (OOP – Modifiers)
Week 6: File Handling |
The world of programming may seem complex and challenging at first, but don’t let that discourage you! We support you in preparing for your studies and will also be there for you during your studies if you have questions or run into difficulties.
If you have questions about programming, get stuck during the course, or would like to learn more about a specific topic, join our Discord server and chat with us:
